About
Trained in the canon. Singing what's being written next.
Elena Voss trained at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna before joining the ensemble at Bayreuth, where she spent six seasons building the Wagnerian roles that anchor her repertoire today. It is the same foundation — breath, resonance, projection without amplification — that every role she sings depends on, whether it was written in 1876 or last spring.
Since 2021 she has originated five roles in newly commissioned operas, working with composers who write for the size and colour of a dramatic voice rather than around it. She sings every note live, in the house, unamplified — the way the repertoire she grew up on demands.
She continues to alternate her seasons between the canon and new commissions, by design. Each one, she says, keeps the other honest.
The Reviews
What the critics heard.
Voss doesn't perform Brünnhilde so much as recalibrate the frequency of the room.
Stagecraft Quarterly — Der Ring des Nibelungen, BayreuthThe first ten minutes of Terra Nova are her voice and a dark stage, nothing else. It is the bravest thing I have seen an opera do with silence in a decade.
